Why it's important to Dry and Clean your Chest Waders after use

Chest Waders provide excellent protection for the wearer against water and the cold in many working situations. However, proper maintenance of your Chest Waders — specifically cleaning and drying them after each use — is crucial to ensure they are ready for use when next required and for other crucial reasons.

1. Preventing Wear and Tear

Moisture and dirt can weaken the materials of your Waders over time. Residual water can cause mold and mildew compromising the integrity of the fabric and seams. Cleaning and drying them thoroughly ensures they last longer and remain in tip-top condition.

2. Avoiding Invasive Species Transfer

When moving between waterways, dirty Waders can unintentionally spread invasive species, harmful bacteria, or algae. Cleaning waders removes any organisms or debris, helping protect delicate aquatic ecosystems. Invasive species are a huge challenge in the UK with organisations including The Environment Agency and Canal & River Trust investing huge amounts of time and money into educating the public to the importance of following the correct procedures.

3. Eliminating Unpleasant Odors

Damp and dirty Waders are a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to unpleasant smells. Regular cleaning keeps them fresh and free from odors, making your outdoor adventures more enjoyable.

How to Care for Your Waders

It is advisable to take a few minutes to correctly care for your Ollyskins Waders after each use, ensuring that they are ready for use the next time, and optimising their lifespan.

  • Remove larger debris: Remove any larger dirt and debris

  • Rinse with water: Rinse with clean water and a soft brush.

  • Give them a gentle soap: For thorough cleaning, use a mild soapy solution.

  • Dry Completely: We recommend hanging them upside down by the boots in a well-ventilated area to allow them to thoroughly dry. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources, as these can damage the material.

  • Store carefully: If you need to fold your Waders, then fold them carefully taking care to avoid unnecessary folding around the seams and joints.

A little care goes a long way in maintaining your waders and protecting the environments you explore. Make cleaning and drying a post-use ritual, and your waders will serve you well for years.
